Gallery Seven - Interior Tiling
One of the more dramatic changes to the interior of the house was the addition to the tile floor to the main part of the house. We wanted to have a continuous material for the floor throughout the entire main floor of the house, and since there was so much hardwood on the walls and ceiling we needed to have a material that was a contrast in both color and texture. After looking at a number of alternatives including laminate, marmoleum, and stone we decided on an oversized (18in x 18in) porcelain tile that has the appearance and texture of honed slate for around 1/3 the cost. Interestingly, the porcelain is so hard and difficult to cut that the installers when through 3 or 4 diamond blades for their tile cutter - apparantly this is almost a year's worth of blades for normal tile! On the plus side the surface is tough, scratch resistant and easy to clean.
